Franklin County is located along the Gulf of Mexico in the Florida Panhandle about 80 miles southwest of Tallahassee, the state capital.
Franklin County makes up the eastern most part of the Forgotten Coast and encompasses some 348,000 acres of beautiful land with over 200,000 preserved acres belonging to the state of Florida. The county also features more than 200 miles of relatively undeveloped shoreline including the barrier islands of St. George Island, Little St. George, Dog Island and St.Vincent Island.
The coastal communities of Apalachicola, St. George Island and Eastpoint are accessible by US Highway 98. By air, our closest commercial airports are located in Tallahassee and Panama City. However, if you have your own plane, our area can be accessed by two private airports in Apalachicola and St. George Island.
Today, Franklin County is not only known for its natural beauty, but also for its bounty of seafood. Our county harvests more than 90% of Florida's oysters and 10% of the oysters consumed in the U.S. Additionally, shrimp, blue crab and finfish are important commercially and bring in over $11 million worth of seafood annually to our docks. And according to the U.S. Census Bureau, Franklin County's population estimate for 2013 tipped off at 11,598 residents. Within that, the city of Apalachicola reached 2,231 residents. Yes, we are small, but we have room to roam!
